''DVD review: City Of Ember''

DVD review: City Of Ember
By Dennis Cavernelis

CITY OF EMBER. Directed by Gil Kenan, with Bill Murray, Tim Robbins,
Saoirse Ronan, Harry Treadaway and Martin Landau.

Inventive and original, this adaptation of the Books of Ember series by Jeanne DuPrau is an engaging and literate adventure superior to the many young adult fantasy movies churned out in the wake of Harry Potter’s success.

The story is set generations after the citizens of planet Earth moved underground when life on the surface became too perilous. In the eponymous city, a world lit by an impressive array of glittering lights, life is getting harder, and the lights which illuminate the city are starting to fail. The city was never designed to be permanently inhabited, but over time and through odd circumstances, the original plan for humanity’s return to the surface has been lost. Luckily, a pair of plucky teens, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow (Saoirse Ronan, Harry Treadaway) suspect all is not well, despite assurances from the city’s cagey mayor (Bill Murray), and they set out to unravel a conspiracy and figure out a way to save the people of their city.

Beautifully shot, with great performances from its young leads, City of Ember is an adventure worth enjoying. Published on the web by Tonight on May 29, 2009.
